Hunting safely near utility lines requires extra caution to prevent catastrophic damage to power infrastructure and life-threatening injuries. While utility rights-of-way often make ideal hunting spots due to the clear lines of sight they provide, discharging a firearm near electrical equipment poses severe risks.
Here is what you need to know to stay safe this season:
- Never shoot at or near utility lines: Stray bullets can sever power lines, shatter insulators, and cause widespread power outages or wildfires.
- Avoid mounting equipment on utility poles: Never attach tree stands, blinds, or cameras to power poles, as this creates a fatal electrocution hazard for you and utility workers.
- Maintain a safe clearance: Keep all gear, stands, and weapons well away from lines, towers, and guy wires to prevent accidental contact.
- Know what’s downwind: Be absolutely certain of your target and what lies beyond it before taking a shot near utility corridors.
- Report damage immediately: If you see damaged utility equipment or a downed power line, stay far away and report it to emergency services or the utility company right away.
